Pakhit: aka Keeter, Keet

Born: Early May, 1990

Passed over the RB: July 12, 2008

Breed: Domestic Long Hair; Classical Brown Tabby

Pakhit's Story:

When I left a nine-year long bad relationship in early 1990, I decided that my present to myself would be a third kitty. I had wanted to have three cats for years, but my ex didn't want that many. So I went searching for a new baby. Well, there were no kittens to be found and I didn't think my two older cats would accept a newcomer who wasn't a youngster. Disappointed, I told a friend who lived in Seattle at the time about my fruitless search. Well, a couple days later she called me back and said, "I've got you a kitten. I went to a cat show and there she was. She's not quite cat show quality, so her owners were looking for a home for her." Well, Sue proceeded to describe this classical brown tabby ball o' fluff to me, and I could hardly wait to go pick her up. Trouble was, I couldn't make the trip for a couple of weeks, because I didn't have a car and had to rely on friends for any long-distance traveling.

I began searching out names, and found that another cat Goddess (perhaps an aspect of Bast) in ancient Egypt, was known as Pakhit. Seeing that I name all my girls after Goddesses, and thinking of that kitten, I knew this was her name. I called Sue and told her so that she could begin acclimating the kitten to the name, and apparently she took to it right away.

Keeter up close(Pakhit, up close, and personal)

When I walked into Sue's house, I looked at the cat and she was the fluffiest, scruffiest looking baby. So cute, and so loud! Well, I played with her, let her chew on my glasses, let her lick my face, and then when I sat the cat carrier down on the floor, Pakhit jumped down, walked over, crawled in it and went to sleep.

Pakhit is a Taurus, though I don't know her specific birth date--but she was born around mid-month. She was born in 1990 and is a fat, sassy, bossy cat whose meows are orders rather than questions. She knows who the queen of the household is and that's her!

She's a playful cat, and she has the unique ability to wake me from nightmares by patting my face with her paw when I'm in the midst of one. She comes into my dreams a lot, one night I dreamt this huge black dog was attacking me, and Pakhit showed up, as big as a tiger, to frighten the dog away. I woke up to her tapping my face with her paw and meowing.

She loves catnip, as does Tara and Luna (Meerclar isn't that affected by it), and she also loves cantaloupe, squash and pineapple. The following updates started when I created my first website.

November 1998 Update On Pakhit: Pakhit is up to about 14 pounds now and basically has turned into a tribble on legs. A very, very feisty tribble on legs. She is doing fine and has retained her spot of Queen of the household, keeping the others in line when they step over the boundaries. She's also discovered the joys of my new rocking chair (together with Meerclar, they have claimed it for their own and I'm lucky if I can push them both out so I can sit down) and the joys of our new comforter (soft and warm). Which means more cat hair on everything. Thank Gods for air cleaners and lint brushes.

January 2000 Update on Pakhit: She's doing quite well, is a huge furble and has taken full control of our new home.

January 2001 Update on Pakhit: Fatter, sassier and basically a tribble with razor blades. What can I say? Happy cat, happy cat, happy cat.

October 2001 Update on Pakhit: Well, just about the same--loves to race around the hardwood floors and go skidding down the hall. This year she's had an enemy to concentrate on--a gorgeous Orange Kitty who likes to come watch our cats through the wall of windows we have in our home. Pakhit goes into a frenzy of rage and yowls until the Orange Kitty gets bored and leaves.

November 2002 Update on Pakhit: Keeter is grumpier than she used to be, but still big, fluffy and happy. She loves answering her mail on the Ask The Cats forum and she tends to sneak in and use the keyboard begging friends and family for "kitteez treetz" when we're not watching. She's nuts over our new living room furniture and still going strong. Orange Kitty doesn't come over to look in the window quite as much but the feud continues.

April 2004 Update on Pakhit: Keeter is growing a little older, she'll be 14 next month. She's still feisty though, and seems happy. I think her ability to smell is slowing down, it takes her a little longer to find the kitty treats, but she seems happy and healthy. She's not quite a tubby as she used to be--a natural result of aging for some cats. Orange Kitty is still a rival, and still comes over to peek in the window, so Keeter stays on guard patrol when she thinks the 'innerlopur' is around.

November 2004 Update on Pakhit: Keeter's doing fine. After Meerclar and Luna's escape in late July-August, I was really worried about her. Though Luna came home pretty quickly, Meerclar was gone for two weeks and since they're best buddies, I was concerned that if she didn't make it home, Keeter would slide into a depression she wouldn't be able to pull out of. She wandered around the house meowing all day and night while Meerclar was gone, and I couldn't get her interested in any of her toys. But all is well now.

January 2006 Update on Pakhit: Keeter has a little arthritis but continues to be a butterball of health. We had full bloodwork done on them last year and her cholesterol is a little high but that's all that showed wrong. She also has taken to talking to her catbox, talking to her food dish, talking to the wall...since she's in good health, we're thinking this is possibly just a little bit of her senior years starting to show. She's a happy cat, and loves to cuddle with me 24/7.

April 2007 Update on Pakhit: Keeter has developed, over the past year, a kidney problem. At almost 17 (as of next month), she's starting to show her age more. One of her kidneys has shut down, the other is still working. She's also now getting transdermal gel twice a day in her ear for hyperthyroidism. I hate to say it, but I don't know how many years--I'm hoping for that rather than months--she has left with us. She's happy, though, and treated like the Queen that she is.

July 12, 2008 Update on Pakhit: In what has to be the worst week we've had in a long, long time, Keeter followed Luna over the Bridge today. She was 18 years old, and her kidneys just couldn't do it anymore. She passed quietly and comfortably into the arms of Bast--Samwise and I both felt the Lady Bast there waiting for our girl, and we know she'll be back again, with Luna, in our family. Until then, we have to make the best home we can for Tara and Meerclar--especially since Meerclar and Keeter were best buddies. Sleep gently, my little Keeter, we miss you so much already.
